SeniorNet,
based in California, is an international non-profit membership organization
for seniors age 50 and older who want to learn computer skills to
enhance their everyday lives and "to bring wisdom to the information
age." The SeniorNet mission is consistent with that of its
primary local sponsor, Shepherd's Center of Greensboro -- "older
adults helping older adults pursue independent and active lives
of quality."
The
Greensboro SeniorNet Learning Center is operated by more than
70 dedicated volunteers whose goal is to teach senior citizens how
to use technology to make their lives fuller and more informed.
Through our efforts we hope to build a community of individuals
who use the computer to make their presence known in the world and
to improve the quality of their lives and their community.
Greensboro's
SeniorNet is sponsored by The
Shepherd's Center of Greensboro, reflecting its mission of "older
adults helping older adults pursue independent and active lives
of quality..." The SeniorNet activities are coordinated by
Jean Eason (299-0993). The Shepherd's Center phone number is 378-0766.
Equipment
for SeniorNet has been made possible with financial donations and
gifts in kind from AT&T, Bellsouth, the SelfHelp
organization, Hewlett-Packard,
the Hillsdale Fund, the Community
Foundation of Greater Greensboro, and other local contributors.
SeniorNet
classes are small (never more than 6 students, each with a computer)
with several coaches. Instructors use a projector to demonstrate
tasks to be done by students. Questions and discussion are encouraged
so that no student gets lost!
Class
and other activity schedules are arranged monthly according to volunteer
teacher availability. Most meet twice a week (MW or TTh) for two,
three, or four consecutive weeks. Morning hours are 9 am to 11:30
am and afternoon hours are 1:30 pm to 4 pm.
The
fee for most courses is $35 (exception: the basic beginniners 4-session
course is $25); a tutorial guide and other materials are provided.
Students are encouraged but no longer required to become members
of the national SeniorNet
organization. Scholarships are available for students with limited
means. Apply to the coordinator. For a complete listing of classes

A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly. Click on the Blogger link below for information on how to get started blogging. When you get your blog online, send me an email and I will include it in the list below.

Walter, an active Greensboro SeniorNet Volunteer has a blog of useful links for students. Click HERE.
